A guide to five Egyptian marbles: their colours, origins and best uses, and how to choose between them.

Egyptian marble types: Galala, Samaha, Filetto, Melly Grey and Zafarana

Egyptian marble is known for its warm beige tones, its durability and prices that compare well with imported marble. These are the five Egyptian marbles we supply, and what each one is best for.

Galala Extra

A light beige marble from the Galala Mountain, where Egypt’s best-known marble quarries are. It is one of the most renowned Egyptian marbles and is used indoors and out for walls, floors and stairs. It costs less than imported beige marbles such as Spanish Crema Marfil and Turkish Calimera, which makes it a popular alternative for large floors. See Galala Extra.

Samaha

A beige marble from Egyptian quarries, close in colour to Galala and just as adaptable in size and thickness. It resists heat and humidity and is easy to clean and maintain. See Samaha.

Filetto

A beige ground crossed by elegant brown stripes. Its linear pattern gives floors and walls movement, and it is also used for stairs and house facades. It is affordably priced. See Filetto.

Melly Grey

A dark grey marble, and one of the rarest Egyptian marbles for its colour and appearance. It gives a luxurious look to walls, floors, stairs and facades, and contrasts well with the beige marbles in borders and inlays. See Melly Grey.

Zafarana

Warm beige with subtle veining, from the quarries of the Zafarana region on the Red Sea. It pairs a warm, natural look with durability, for interior and exterior design projects. See Zafarana.

How to choose

  • A calm, light floor over large areas: Galala Extra or Samaha.
  • Pattern and movement: Filetto.
  • Contrast, borders and a dramatic look: Melly Grey.
  • Warm tones with natural veining: Zafarana.

All five come as slabs, tiles and blocks, cut to any size and thickness, in finishes from polished and honed to brushed and tumbled. Compare them side by side or ask for a quote.
